hey i wanted to make a map where the graphics looks somwhat diffrent... 2d pp; with a 3d enviroment, yes 2d models like in ragnorok online or final fantasy tactics. so i was wondering is this is possible and if is anyone could tell me how to? i cant even make 3d models so i have very little modeling xp. i did once make a good model but i could never get it to work on warcraf 3 so if you could tell me what tools i need and kinda guide me through this without me having to do it on my own and mess it up like the last 1 for making 2d models |

Well, sure you could, but they couldn't really face the right way at all times, and the skin would look all weird no doubt. So while you could, it'd probably look like crap |

Sure it's possible, my Pacman map looks 2D. Anyway you would just make a model out of a plane instead of a box. Simple. Read our Modeling Tutorials for further info. |

Yeah, but how would you get it to face the camera at all times? |

Billboard planes? Isn't that what they're called. The industry has been using them since doom1,it's no new technology. The Priest, Troll spellcasters(I forgot the name of them too) and footmen have these on thier weapons. The problem is you can't animate these with a regular rig. |

Oh yeah, those uh, stupid me well, they wouldn't be easy to animate so I suppose I wasn't totally wrong |

Sure they would be easy to animate, they would use animated textures. What's easier than that? |

I never said it wasn't easy, mezzer did hehe. I'm in no way an animation expert or a warcraft player anymore but is it possible to use animated textures as attack and death animations? Now that I think about it though you can use billboard planes and bones to animate. Lets use this finalfantasy sprite as an example: You cut out the arms, legs and bottom jaw in your image editing program and paste them around the body. Now you model a plane and map the body onto the plane. Next model planes for the arms, legs and jaw on the same axis and rig him with a simple bone structure. HOLY SHEIT EAZY!!! |

the problem would be the walking around, billboarded planes face the camera all the time, and WCIII doesn't support playing multiple walk anims depending on camera direction. |

Just do a style like paper mario, he is either facing left or right or from behind. |
