Terrain tutorials

I hope this topic is in the right place.

I'm looking for any tutorials or info or anything to help me get better at terraining.
I have already read the tutorials I could find here on the site. But i still am not that good. I'm currently working on a snowy valley hidden inside a mountain. This valley only has two possible entrances to the valley. I'm good at this since its my first real try on my own terraining project.

Any additional help would be helpful.

Thank you,

Post some screenies, then people can see what you have done, what needs improving, and give you some suggestions from there :)

not much done.

What i mean by it sucks and stuff is the shape of the terrain and making it look realistic(which it doesn't)

I'm just trying to get the terrain done(not doodads and stuff like that)

Dunno, this might help.

and you should look around for people that posted threads with the same question, so we don't end up with a million repeated threads.

Plan your map by a paper, draw everything you are making (Doesn't matter if your art drawings suck).

Get Shadowflare WinMPQ and view War3xlocal.mpq in your Warcraft 3 Directory, Open the maps by double click and look on blizzard terraining (How the tiles are being done, look at the trees planting and the tiles under them, The Roads and their randomity).

Do The Ashenvale forest tutorial (found in the tutorials sticky in this forum).

Do the 2nd tutorial there aswell (The one on how to make natural yet slow terrain without using smooth).

Participate in the Weekly Terraining and do alot of maps and watch other people's maps, ask them how they did it and even post your own maps and ask people for suggestions and feedback.

The rest is gained by experience. Good luck.

Edit: Randomise the tiles all around the map, It takes ages to make them good (In the maps I do, I remake most of it 3 times untill I get them to fit naturally).

Go to Modify Tileset (Under advanced Menu) and cross the Use Custom Tileset, Mix the tiles you want from other tilesets as well as the Main tileset (There is a limited number for them).

Also note that for example if you make the snow the farthest to the right, You end up with the snow covering the tile you placed (Change this to fit correctly and I recommend it to be the Base Tileset, To fit the area).

This step I'll say Is most important and not many people might agree.

Think of terraining as a fun hobby, coupled with some music of your choice, you can have fun.

Don't make maps for people's opinions and to be famous mapmaker, Make them for having fun for yourself and sharing it with other people.

Don't give up because of mass negative suggestions, Keep working and dont lose hope.

When people post their opinions, Judge them by yourself only and don't agree just because he posted, I could easily say the waterfalls suck but in Truth they are very good.

only problem with remaking it is my bridge. I had to use a doddad and stack it in order to make the bridge's legs.
I'm gonna try requesting for a model to match.

The best thing to do would be to post your terrain, people will give you feedback. Another thing is that, terraining is just like anything else. You only get better by doing it, so what if your first terrains aren't perfect? They will get better in time.
