The amateur that I am, this took me a few hours to draw it based off a photo, with some small modifications. That's the second portrait I've done so far, and the last one was about a year ago. What do you think? ^^ |

Its decent, but in a few hours you should have already had shading and such. |

it's not decent at all. It's obvious that he didn't even strived to get the proportions right and make a decent study. You have much to learn, young one (loktar). |

I'm moving this to the concept art forum section where it can get the critiques it deserves. Also, please resize your image before posting it on the web. Having the original photo would also help for people who wish to critique. |

Oops didn't realize the artist's corner even existed, sorry :o And sorry for not resizing :| I did cut it out from a picture over 3500x2550 to one of 2000x1600 ^^ It's my 5th real drawing, and, including this one, I only actually finished three of them (that is, not including doodles and things I made as a child..) so you can't expect me to have good shading.. also, the photograph was a heavily lighted black and white picture, so it didn't have much shading to begin with. I can't see much wrong with the proportions though... I'm not posting the original because I'm not sure if she'd want me to (and no, I'm not gonna ask her :p) Thanks for the comments though ;) BTW: I resized the picture and reuploaded it. Edit: Ok, I'll post the photo anyway :p I mirrored and rotated it to reflect what I wanted to get. |

ya.. i think the main issue w/ the drawing is the reference picture. It has really high contrast which can be either really easy, or really hard for the artist.. it depends on the artist's style. Draw what you see.. not what you think you see. the hair is a number 10 black, and the skin is a 0 white. Theres minimal shading in the photo. The nose(errr.. what you can see of the nose) is a 1 or 2, same with the lip. so essentially... you should focus on drawing the hair/eyes, being that they are the most dominant/darkest things in the photo. as for my "draw what you see comment and not what you think/expect to see" comment... you can only BARELY see half of the nose. With that, you wouldnt draw the nose that you drew. Also.. try experimenting w/ different mediums. graphite.. aka pencil.. doesnt get dark. the msot you can get is probably a 7/8 black.. and even then, you get a shiney metalicy look to it. Good luck |

Well I darkened it a bit and made the contrast lower, so I could see a bit more, which allowed me to draw the nose with a bit more detail (and all the rest too for that matter.) I focused mainly on the eyes, and secondly on the mouth. I think I'll stick with just pencils though, I don't really like using anything else, and I don't think I'd be any good with it either ^^ IMO, I think I did a pretty good job at 'reproducing' her face to look what she really looks like.. which was what I was aiming for. Thanks for the comment, it was very helpful :D |

I actually googled "ella". On another note, I (we) can't say much more on the pic. It looks flat, eyes and lips look weird and the perspective needs work but it's absolutely normal since you're just picking up drawing so keep sketching and posting! |
