The .mdx and .mdl formats are the compressed game models, while .blp formats are compressed .jpg (images and textures), I think that is how it is, I am a newbie as well, but you can read the Warcraft 3 art tools documentation that comes with it.

MDX files contain a compact binary representation of the model. The art tools export model files in MDX format by default. MDL files contain a textual representation of the model. This format is inefficient for Warcraft III to load and parse, but it’s straightforward for debugging. You can choose to output models in MDL format for debugging.

The following link contains a FAQ about editing tools, be sure to read it as well =]

If you have wc3viewer you can extract the mdxs from the game. Just go to "Current file>>>>Extract MDX>>>>>pick a folder" There are multiple conversion programs that are really small programs to convert mdx to mdl. Most people use war3file converter which is what i use. I think they have links here to dl it. I believe Magos works as well though im not familiar with the program. The .blps are just skin files btw. They are not part of the model files. The picture just wraps around the mdx.

you people realy start to agravate me. If you don't have a question about the actual process of modeling or animation, don't even bother to think about posting it here.

Ok, just to clear this up. Mdl/mdx files are models, blp files are textures. To make it short, you can't convert a model to a texture or vice versa. I think everything has been said now -> locked.
