Probably those four basic "races" - Human, Orc, Undead and Night Elf. And to answer your question, no you can't really create a new, fifth race per se. You can use one of the existing races and alter their tech tree and units to create a new race, but you can't really add another race, which could be selected in the "waiting room" thingy. Maybe you could, if you'd create a total conversion, but that is a another topic completely, since you have no experience with the editor or anything map making related.

You can't create an official race that can be made in melee. But if you mean just create a race out of the blue for your custom trigger map. Just create a bunch of custom units to make up your race, spells to make up your units, buildings such as a building that makes some untis, 1 or 2 upgrade buildings, set up a tech tree for building and all that. As for selecting your custom race. Just use triggers or dialogue buttons. Then use triggers to create a "town hall" where you can mine from and like 4 miners.

If you don't know anything about the map editor. It's best to get used to the basics. Commit yourself to make a short simple map that you can experiment with the features and tools and get a feeling for how it works. At first it was very hard for me to understand how the world editor worked.

Here are things I did before I got any good at the map editor.

1. Look at other people's maps or custom blizz maps. Take a look at the custom units, spells, triggers, and terrain.

2. First go to object editor I think it was called. Create a custom unit. It may look complicated at first but just go down the lines and change what makes sense to you.

3. Then create a spell doing the same thing, you can only create a spell based off another spell. Then assign that spell to the unit.

4. Experimenting with the terrain will help too. That should get you going.

5. Experiment with triggers.

Pretty much trial and error, and experimenting is how I became proficient with the map editor.

Well hope that helps anyways.
