I need help with rigging and no one seems to know what to do and i was just wondering if its ok to use the skin modifier and i would like to know how Blizzard does it. The way that everyone usually does it (detaching mesh) isnt blizzards way because all of blizzards models are all one mesh (unless you can prove to me that it is the same ) Please hurry and respond because i am at the rigging stage of my model and need info asap.

Thanks

Thanks ElTrauma but one question when you rig and animate it,does the verticies automatically weld to the ones it was attached to? Also do you think if i made a model in max 8 i should just use envelopes.
BTW how come blizzards models have a skin modifier and also are attatched making one mesh, isnt it different then the tutorial you reccomended to me?

I am almost sure that the art tools requiere 3dsmax 4.1 to 5.1, I do not think they work for newer versions of the software. You can make detached parts weld automatically for WC3 using the User Property Editor that comes with the Art Tools (which is installed to 3dsmax and is found on the Utilities rollout) all you have to do is select the detached mesh parts you want and look for the option "Connected" on the User Property Editor under Mesh Properties. I just checked the examples that come with the Art Tools in .max format, and they do not use the skin modifier, but it would be pointless to use the skin modifier anyway since all you have to do is link the detached mesh to its corresponding bone... I know it does not leave room for pretty animations, but I guess you do not need complex animations on a game that does not emphasize on gfx. So yea, no need to use envelopes or skin modifier =]
I am a still a newbie to WC3 modding, so you could also wait for someone with more experience than me to help you out as well

Right.. no skin modifier, no enveloppe... just "connected" is "user mesh property"

Thanks

There is no art tools in max 8 only in max 5.... do you think my animations will turn out fine if i use them with a skin modifier. I already completed my stand animation(just as a test)

Check the stickies on this forum http://www.wc3campaigns.net/forumdisplay.php?f=447 - I guess you can use the skin modifier, but you would need to use max bones, which I think are unsupported, there is a script on this forum that allows you to export IK animations (using max bones or biped) to bones that work with WC3.
I am not sure if you can export your work to a proper file using 3dsmax 8, but I guess you can always ask someone else to get it in game after you have finished your work.
