Finally decided to get around to doing some more Iron Plague stuff, this is the Earth Caste worker for the crystal race. The Sapling transforms into various useful buildings.

Model is unanimated and unparticled at the moment.

ZOMG! YOU UZEDED SMUDGES!

seriously now, you won't go anywhere if you'll use smudge all the time. I don't get it why misters and misses can't process that information.

What's so bad about smudge? The leaves look fine, though i agree the wood looks crap, i'm not good with wood, need to work on that.

See, that is the attitude I want to combat. You have to understand and to see that using smudge to blend colors and to add various effects results in a very ugly, smeary and it gives a kitsch look. And I don't understand why people can't see this and what I realy don't understand is why they don't want to see this. I just hope than when you realy decide to become a professional you will hopefully see why smudge will lead you nowhere. If you don't want to become a pro, then continue doing this but keep in mind that you won't attract the right audience.

Were i doing a high resolution model or an image i'd agree with you, but for low res skins such as this i cannot see what's so horrible about smudge. The leaves look fine, the wood looks better with the new skin, though still not quite how i'd like it, but that's due to my lack of skill in doing wood, not from any smudging. Personally i feel that the smoother gradient achievable by using smudge is better than the ovbious shading lines that appear if a very light brush isn't used, and since i don't particulary enjoy spending ages going over and over a skin to get rid of those lines, i'd rather use smudge.

Dude you can make smooth blends with brushes easely, really. Last time i used smudge was on that pirana, look what it got me. Uglor.

I did the exact opposite for my autumn thingie, i used 50% opicity brushes, and it looks infinately better.

The model looks nice, allthough i think there are some irregulairities in the mesh judging by the shading in the second pic. post some wireframe shots <3

Well i don't know how you do it then, because if i use anything above about 15% opacity i get really noticable shading lines unless i use about a dozen shading colours.

I've added a wireframe.

Hell, I like it atleast. Good work!

Pheonix, in a wireframe view of a model you must show the actual mesh too (press F3). You can't realy see the topology right if you have the mesh transparent and especialy if you have overlapings.

Indeed.

Ah, fix in a mo'

Pity i can't meet one of you in person, i'd love to be shown exactly what it is i'm doing wrong, since apparantly it's something.

If you buy me a first class plane ticket to Australia, and assure me food, beer and a bed then I'll come and help you.

The mesh looks nice and clean.
