What can you NOT do?

So many discussions floating around about amazing crap you can do with this game, I have yet to see anyone come up with something in particular they set out to do but couldn't. Anyone come up with something like this?

to some people the WE is way too limited, or in this case, the file format and the reading way of the game.
You cant add custom made mdoels/textures/terrain in it, whic was possible in the beta

You can't modify spells, You can't modify costs of upgrades, you can't create new spells, but there is that amazing trigger system which you could use to improvise...

Making/modifying spells:

Give the unit a spell that summons a unit (Water elemental, feral spirit) and then detect when that unit appears, remove it, and do some effect. It'll happen fast enough to look like a new spell. To emulate autocast spells, just have something periodically happen to units near spellcasters and have the spell casting animation play. You can add more spells by using the item summon abilities.

Modify upgrade cost:

Create a custom unit with cost you want and icon you want, and build time you want, etc. Make it trainable at upgrade building. Setup a trigger to detect when the unit is made, remove it, and apply the upgrade. One problem is that this make it possible to que upgrades, but remove the ability to train the unit after you detect it being made once and this shouldn't be a problem (although if you have 1 in que and it's cut off I'm not sure you get money back). A possible solution is to make it a purchasable merc, but then a hero has to be next to the building, and a number is displayed which doesn't look as cool. You'd probably be best off creating a special location the player can walk onto to trigger getting the upgrade when they have the $.

I know, I really hope blizzard fixes this in patches and doesn't wait until the expansion pack (you know they're gonna make one). That and it needs to be easy to have higher than level 10 heroes. And buttons to buildings that cause triggers so you don't have to do all these custom unit workarounds would be nice. And keyboard input would be really nice.

It also wouldn't hurt to fix the morphing bug so you can have a peon morph into bear form for example >_<

Looking at the mpq that contain editable slk, I don't think blizzard will make upgrade/research cost & time avaliable within the Warcraft III worldeditor.

Perhaps it will happen in the expansion(if there is one). Look at starcraft and the expansion, the original starcraft doesn't allow the names of unit to be changed. Whereas the expansion allows it. That's is a little significant changes that blizzard always does for its game.

They ought to -- otherwise Staredit is in a way more powerful than WE :p

Wanna bet the War3 Exp Pack comes with "even more advanced World Editor!"

those bastards at Blizz, love em, then HATE EM.

whups, missed your post Data =)

I don't think there's a morphing bug per se, I just think there's an animation the dotc elf form makes, and of course when another unit performs the bear form ability, it doesn't show this animation due to the fact the peon isn't a DotC. It could be done if you made your own animation, can't imagine that'd be easy.

Just as philmcneal said worldedit goes two steps fowards and one step back!!! Why can't they simply include the upgrade/research time/cost in the worldeditor to make the life of map creator more easier. It such a pain in the XXX to see advanced trigger in Worldeditor but w/o the time/cost edit options found in older staredit. Even staredit include the time needed to cast spell whereas W.E. make it manual/auto cast and have a WAIT duration which really piss ...

Ok, lets not trash WE, it seems that blizzard made it on purpose, its LIMITED. Because they don't want mods to pop out. And basically their engine is NOT free. Why waste time editing spells? Let's just wait for blizzard to release a proper editor. (If they will)

3DGuy, blizzard DOES want us to make mods; mods contribute to the longevity of a game. They were pretty supportive of SC mappers in the past too, and never objected to the many SC mods around. Infact, they hired a guy from camsys.

Also, you're absolutely right, their engine isn't free -- you had to shell out 60$ for it. Hell, that's how much you pay for the quake games too and you get the _source_. War3 doesn't even have that. And it's not comparable to some company paying tons of money to license the engine -- us modders/mappers aren't going to make any money off of our creations.

Blizzard may add ability to change upgrade/mana costs -- but I doubt we'll see a fully fledged new editor arising anytime soon. Don't hold your breath anyway.

Well yeah your right, they want mods to come out, BUT remember what happened to Half-Life?

Half-Life was meant to be the best FPS ever, but then the 1.0.0.6 patch (or whatever it was, cannot remember) made a custom game feature, that would enable mods. Then what happened? TFC was the first official mod that came out, secondly, there was Counter-Strike and Action Half-Life. It would be odd to play CS back then... an ugly Counter-Terrorist that had a crowbar (doh!). Until days became weeks, weeks became months, months became years. Until they had sold their own game! HL wasn't really well known nowadays... they say "Counter-Strike" has its own engine. Speaking of Warcraft III, this situation might happen to Blizzard too.

My main problem with the world editor is the creation of new units. I wanted to make a hero kobold (I don't know why but I love those damned things!) but since I have to base it on a pre-existing hero problems arise. It's easy enough to base the new unit on say, the archmage and change the archmage's model and face to the kobold's since the newly created hero would have the archmage's defaults, but the sounds! Arg! It would be so nice if Blizzard would have just put a set unit's soundset in the list of crap the same way they did the model and face used.

Oh well, seems people are close with all this modding stuff but I want to take the easy route.
