How to make Variations with custom Models

Ok, so after a lot of fiddleing with paths and such, i figured how to make variations of custom models.
Steps:
------
1.) Import the models you want to use. For an Example, I used Mc!'s Death Woods models.

2.) Import another small model (preferably with ingame textures to keep the filesize low)

3.) Change the small model's path so that its name is the same as the others, but add a "0" on the end of the first variant's name, a "1" on the second variant's name, (ect). (Mc's Death Woods already have these numbers, so it is unnessesary.)

4.) Save. Exit and Restart the World Editor. Open your map.

5.) Go to the object editor and create a new destructible. (for custom tree models such as the Death Woods, you have to Create it from something other than a tree, then change its "targeted as" to tree)

6.) Change the "model Variations" to however many variations you imported, then change its model to the non numbered model. (In this case, "DeathWood.mdl")

This will save you a lot of time when trying to make forests and such.

Edit: I added a 1kb dummy model you can use.

This is what your import and Destructible Data should look like:

are there any requirements for the "small" model?

no, but you want a model with as small a filesize as possible, as nobody will ever see it.
Edit: I attached a "small model" to use.

Tim.
Nice work, please attach a dummy model so users can use it as the "small" model.

Short but useful.
I approve.

I dont quite get it. This will trick WC3 to think that the model has many variations? Forcing it to display more randomness than without it?

Does it work with units ?

IrkedPlatypus
what?
You cant make random variations with units.
This only works with doodads and destructibles.

It kind of tricks the WE into thinking that the models are variants of the "small" one, by changing the paths to correspond with it.

After posting that I`ve realise how idiotic question it was,
I should ask if there is any way (some trick) to get the same effect for units without triggers
(maybe not to place various units on the map, but for building various unist in barrack)

Anyway good tutorial +rep

hmm...
that seems like a question to ask in a different forum.

IrkedPlatypus, lol, that's bright like day.
I'd like to know how to make variations for doodas, not destructables.
_____
EDIT: Also there's no need in using custom model, you can use a path which doesn't have a model at it.

No response in 2 years - I guess it's not possible.
