Guest | To blizzard, in order to have them do something about the ever growin cult of map rip offs ? maybe some special "approved" custom maps room, where serious map creators can apply and have their maps played as they were intended (i.e. no 101083081301 versions of his map modified by some ****tarded n00bie that wanted to cheat?) |

Uhhh hate to break it to ya but there is a map protector out there, free to anybody that wants to use it. If they don't use it then it's their own fault for allowing the map to be "open". |

Guest | guys im fully aware that there is a freely distributed map protector out there, but that is not the point, i think it would be proper for us as a community to get together and do something in order to bring about a cooperation between us as artists and blizzard in order to create a more plesant and welcoming settin to all the map makers out there. |

*sigh* The map editor was released as-is with no guaranteed support - for the player to do whatever they wanted with it. What I am trying to point out is that this is entirely a player / community issue, and not a blizzard issue. You don't petition the US govt. because people use money to buy drugs or guns. Blizzard basically said "here is our current editor, do with it whatever you want". Most of the better mapmakers know about the map protectors, and if they choose to not use it, it is so the war3 community can build their own clones, mods of their map as they see fit. I don't view the cloning of popular maps as a problem. If that's what the majority of players want to do, then more power to 'em. If someone wants to make a really cool map and not have people edit it, then they use one of the many map protectors out there. If someone was really serious about creating a mod community, they would do one of two things: a) Work with other people in a popular forum b) Put their e-mail, AIM, ICQ# etc in their map as a text file in the beginning so that people could contact them with suggestions etc or if they wanted to collaborate. The only maps Blizzard supports are Blizzard-made maps, found in your maps directory and not in the "download" subdirectory. Every now and then they may release another map for free, as a gift. Don't expect more out of them. To me I would consider it an insult to petition them over something so small, where there are a great many other positive things they could do for the mod community if they had time to spare, such as releasing a file converter that allowed you to import animations from 3dmax, or more customizable options within the existing framework, such as the ability to allow more customizable spells, or even smaller things like being able to use MiscData.txt in your maps on b.net. |

There isn't really anything blizzard can do about it. It wouldn't be worth their time to ensure that maps aren't stolen. The point is that most people buy the game to PLAY it instead of making maps. And then players don't really care who made the map, as long as its fun. So solving this problems won't really make a whole lot of people much happiers so there's no reason to bother. They have much more important things to be doing. |
