That's not wc3's fault, it's people's who can't use smoothing groups right fault.

Well it's not bad if you wanted to achieve a made-from-dough effect.

Hey its X
well, its the closest way I can get a render effect like in 3ds max, using Gmax.

Well the export/import tools on gmax do not allow you to carry any modifiers with it. So there no way to add smoothing modifiers, unless you made every edge 90 degrees by hand witch would take forever.

There is rendering tool for gmax but unless you plan on not leaving gmax any time soon then its not really worth the hassle.

You don't need any modifiers to set the smoothing groups...you do it from editable poly/mesh.

Even using the smoothing groups you still get the same effects. besides im pretty sure its war3 in some way do the fact most there models are nothing more then little pyramids put together.

But...Now that you brought me back to trying smoothing groups again I might be able to get it to where it won't smooth out during the export process.

Then it must be the exporter or something. When I export with the art tools from max 5 it's all the same as it was in max.

Basicly the only thing the script does

Converts all the verticies into data with X,Y,Z cordnates
Saves the UNwrap and converts that into text data if you wan't to call it that

Otherwise minus a few simple things I managed to squeeze in There not much do about it unless somone who bought that 100$ on maxscript wan'ts to improve it lol.
