Feedback, anyone?

If this should be in the sketch dump, please just delete the post and I'll post it there.

Hey guys, I've never really considered myself an artist, but I was in the mood yesterday and I imagined up these 3 monsters based off of the same basic motif. One lives on land, another in the sea, and I think the 3rd one is supposed to be flying with some sort of suction cups on its back.

What I'm really looking for here is some feedback on wether or not I may have any artistic ability, and if some of you think I do, what you would suggest working on to improve.

I've never really tried drawing anything with mutch shading or lighting, which is something I know I would like to work on. Also, I've never tried drawing things from different/weird perspectives...

C 'n C me to death, if you please. If these are too big, I will resize them, and if any of these inspire a model/skin I would be overjoyed.

Looks like the same creature but with slight variations in the tail, spike disposition and weird unorganic legs so I guess you have that "motif" going on. I don't know if I'm in a position to tell you if you have an artistic ability because that's a pretty wide question in my opinion. Wether you have a future as an artist is another thing. The overall drawings are pretty mediocre (I don't mean to be mean. xD). If you want to improve your creature design well I suggest ref'ing up on sharks, fishes, lizards or whatever you want to get at least a lil realism in your concepts. But first of all, you should practice "drawing" which is pretty much drawing everything but mostly drawing things you see (life drawing). That'll improve your basic drawing skills so you can move on to more interesting things such as conceptualization blabla. The picture size is a bit big for what's on the drawing.

You can meditate on that while some other folks write better critiques. xD

You drew it. You are supposed to know these things when you draw something.

Funny, the pictures I posted are about 250% of the size they're supposed to be... Odd. Maybe I'll try linking through Photobucket later and see if that fixes it.

Yes, "artistic ability" is very, very general, and I was expecting a general answer, which I recieved. More specifically, no I was not thinking of a career in art, but where does it appear I might fall on the superb-good-bad-abomiable scale?

Oh yes. Damn you realism! Damn it all!

EDIT:

Yes, that is true... but I don't honestly know what I was thinking when I drew them, though.

By all means, be as mean as you want. I'd rather have 15 replies of "You suck, here's why:" than 25 replies of "Cool man. It's OK."

Well, if you haven't drawn much up until this point, you probably have potential. Don't just look at potential as being some sort of magical word equating artistic talents waiting to be unlocked; profiency is arrived at only through dedication. The old adage of relative amounts of perspiration and inspiration apply here.

You have ideas you want to communicate visually. You need to work on your drawing skills to better communicate your ideas. Observational drawing is key. You might be bored of drawing from life all the time; supplement that wiht some creative work as well. But if you want to be good, you need to dedicate a fair amount of time to this.

Have fun though. Come up with ideas that you need to thoroughly think about. Read, watch movies, read the newspaper; you can draw inspiration from everywhere, and the best sources can sometimes be not from other artwork.

Keep at it.

Why thank you, Mr. Ogre_Crossing, your input was useful enough. I know that potential does not equate talent, why is why I didn't ask about potential. I never really listen to myself when I get an idea about something I want to draw, but I will definitely have to pay attention to my drawing urge some more

I do read copious amounts, and sometimes I find the news interesting. Maybe I can get some inspiration from something I'm playing in band. You know what... after thiking about Igor Stravinski's Bercuse and Finale from The Firebird, I feel compelled to draw some sort of a Phoenix or flaming chicken-like thing. Maybe even with some realism this time...

That was supposed to be armor (Think: armadillos). However, I tried to draw the leg armor on its kneekaps, which was not a smart thing to attempt. ><

Everyone has artistic ability.

Just keep practicing right now, dont get caught up in composition and design just yet. Get comfortable with using a pencil before you go anywhere else.
