Anyone here play the game Netstorm? It was a real time strategy game, but a weird one. Unit's were mostly stationary, but could be placed near "generators." You have no control over units, but rather built them in postions which would cause them to attack nearby units. Units were either gunlike cannons, wall-like blockers, or spawners, which spawned short lived creatures. Each type of cannon had different firing patterns, and each wall did something special (one was invincible on one side, one regenerated, etc). There were also several different types of "peon" type units, each with different abilities and strengths. The object of the game was to get your units into a postion where they could attack a "high priest" who was mobile but vulnerable. There was also this really weird bridge-building component to the game, since all of this took place in the sky, but I can't see how that could be done in WC3. Anyway, for somebody looking for an idea, this could be an interestnig one. It woud need moderate to heavy triggering work, but nothing too insane, I think. I'm just throwing this idea out to anyone who might want to use it, since I'm bogged down in my own project, but it would be cool to see this made - it was a neat game, and might make a fun mod to play multiplayer. Let me know if anybody's interested, or wants more details. |

Guest | I am nearly done my current map and I think this would be a neat idea. Do you have anywhere I can get more info on the game? |

I have played Netstorm and this would be a very hard thing to do... but when u look at all the thing we have already achieved, why not? May be the next bÃÂ*g WC3C project :) |

Do you know where I can get a demo or the games or something? I might be able to help then... |

Ditto, I'd need a demo. |

This site has game info, and amazingly, a cracked retail version (which clocks in around 10Mb). http://www.geocities.com/thomas_debray/netstorm.html ps - to see all of the units in action, you might want to either play one of the "demos" (which are playable), or simply cheat: enter a mission, hit enter, type ".cheatorama 8675309", hit enter, leave that mission, and access one of the later missions, most of which seem to feature almost more units. |

Played It. Its Good... But It would be hard to make. |

Guest | Yeah I think it would be really difficult to make espceially things like the bridges where you need a lot to cross over to other islands and the generators. |

Now, this is a fascinationg one. I just whooped out my old netstorm cd over christmas break and played it some, and I have to say, it would make a cool warcraft mod. The most most effective fun way to create the scenario would be to have a "main unit" to summon up all the buildings , and peon units to harvest resources and capture enemy priests. The "main unit" couldn't be killed, only immobilized(ala the priest in netstorm). This main unit would also have to be sacrificed by an enemy player in order to win. Only a handful of buildings would produce units, which would attack enemy structures within range. Bridges and landmasses would be too hard to program, (though I would certianly be impressed if someone figured out a way to do it) so the map would need to be very open yet have some points, probably around resources, where it would be harder to attack and easier to defend. I'm gonna look at the possibilites and sketch up some plans for this after I get done with my current project(takin forever! ARG!:bangH:). Oh yeah, i'd love to hear some suggestions and ideas about this. Oog out. |

Problem with NetStorm multiplayer is, it's pretty much a bridge building game. You first laid down as many bridges as possible to cut off your opponent's ability to build things, only after you'd choked off your opponent, you'd start laying down the generators and cannons... at any high skill level the whole game was about putting down enough bridges to prevent your opponent from building close to you. I don't see how bridge building could work in Warcraft III, especially at the speed it went in NetStorm. If you made a NetStorm mod without the frenzy of bridging, it wouldn't really be NetStorm at all. =( And yes, I was quite a NetStorm fanatic back in the day... PHEAR MY ICE CANNONS! |

Guest | Only way I can think of incorperating bridges is just use a single one to get across but like you said it really makes it looses its Netstorm feel.:bgrun: |

Maybe make all units (except buildings) fly and make a unit called bridge. Then make a region that goes to all "Bridges" and if a unit leaves the region, teleport it back to the middle of the region. And for building attacks (sun cannon, sun disk thrower) maybe make them units with 0 move speed and use tiggers to determine what angle the unit is facing, and if its outside its attack angle, order it to look to a certain angle... Just some thoughts |

IVe been sitting here, staring at my computer screen for two hours, trying to figure out a way to make that accursed "unit comes within range" event accept a variable so that I can allow attack structures to be built only close to the bridge structures. Does anyone know how to declare a varible for this event? or is it impossible? I would post what work I have done so far on my idea for the netstorm mod, but it's in a mess since I cant get this trigger to work and its 3:00 am so im really friggin tired. Yipe, feelin tired. |

wow.. thats one game i havent played in so long and i LOVED it back in the day I do see a problem with the bridges and what not, but for a map to simply have the resource system, the priest and building / fighting system, it would be an interesting map |
