I'm reaaally sure that's imporssible without rebuilding wc3.

I disagree with you. On battlenet it would be rather impossible, lets think about LAN now. I think that some external program would make it possible to redirect connections from player to player and synchronise the gamestate on all of them... of course w3 modding will die completely when it happens but it is possible

I verry vaugly recall someone from the FPS mod doing it. with hacking, of course. (and probobly a custom bnet server) but that was a looooonnnggg time ago. i think it was actually StonedStupid

yep, wc3 will do a lot of things before the connection is actually established, so hooking the winsock API I think would be useless.
