Scales of teh DEATH

this was made for a book cover for a project of my cousin's (I'm not sure if it will get published, but who gives a damn).
I really uberly don't like it. It's not even close to what I had in mind. I don't like the colors (the hues, the saturation values and also lacks variation), the cartoony look, the compositional unbalance and the lack of detail (it's all so smooth), I hate that I couldn't render metal right, I hate how I rendered the sand and don't like the idea. I see it really as my biggest failure yet. And please don't you state otherwise or try to prove me otherwise because you'll be wrong.
I think I will redo this until I get it right. Even if I work only 5 minutes a day on it, if I get an end result that I'll finally like I'll feel complete.
Why do I still show this? Hell knows...

The only thing my eyes can see is that the face seems to be unpropotionaly detailed to the rest of everything. :/

Why is it called "scales"?? "Tree" is the word you think of.

How about ending all teh death things and start painting cute animals? :)

I really like this. Some texture would be nice, and maybe a bit more going on.

I see no scales..

I like some of the silky look
If you look closely at the horn on our left, where it portrudes from the head, you can see it is horrible improportioned, in fact.. I rather don't like the horn on the left at all.

I love how elephantine it looks, gives it a sense of ageless wisdom - whether that was intentional or not, good work.

Hey, might not have turned out how you envisioned it, but it's still damn good.

That tree kinda looks like an elephant :D
The sand should be a bit lighter and have some more texture to it. Looks like play-doh to me :P
I'm guessing the misproportions of the horns are intentional due to the scales :D
