Dimensional Tag - In Development

Summary:
Esentally sheep tag with a twist. A twist I've never seen in any genre of map. Instead of running around building farms to hide from wolves, you're running around building magic boxes and other things to hide from demons. Except there not one, but TWO whole dimensions to run around in! Theyre the exact same when it comes to size and layout, but a little diffrent in the visuals department. Cast the switch ability, and POOF! you're in the exact same place... in the other dimension!

The goal is... well, im not sure yet. Thats why im posting this! ;) i have a great start on the map, with the key feature working almost flawlessly. (switching between dimensions) but I lack some ideas as to how the game should over-all play.

Features so far:
  • 4 runners against 1 chaser
  • 1 'class' of runner for now
  • Dimensional switching abilitys working and polished
  • The Void Caster chaser:
    • Ability: Void Vision - see the spot you are standing in the other dimension.
    • Ability: Dimensional Barrier - Prevents the target unit from using dimensional-switching magics (ultimate)

Team:
Just me! I may not even finish this

Progress:
Polish: 70% for what i have now
Overall: I need a game play plan before i can put a number here.

Misc.:
So, anyone got any ideas for abilitys? Buildings for the runners? A victory condition? (time limit, kill the chaser, ext.) How the game should generally play?

Im thinking an average game should take no more then 20 or 30 minutes.

Edited because: added formating.

it may be interesting if the dimensions do not have exactly identical physical layouts, so that there are certain areas that can only be reached by swapping between dimensions.

for example winding up on top of a tall hill after switching, or inside an area that is normally completely blocked in 1 dimension but accessible in another.

Im thinking about that for a version 2. But for version 1, im more concernd with getting a basic game concept working ^^' (i love to terrain, so expanding it and adding more players would take a day. especially with the way i've coded it so far)

As for balance, im thinking a little more on the island-defense type side, where instead of massing 200 shitty farms to hide behind, you get a few decent walls. This gives switching between the dimensions more gameplay balance, as runners will need to hide from chasers suddenly appearing, while not being able to simply mass small shitty buildings to hide between.

Wow that's quite original. I like it.

Keep on going! Sounds like a great idea!

Not that I can do anything you can't already do, but I'd be willing to do some additional coding for you if you need it.

Just don't ever attempt to get me to terrain...

Carefull with offering lazy people help! they may just take you up on the offer! Of course, you're kinda boned in the helping me department, as i use vJass ;)

And why would I let you terrain?! its one of the funest parts! =D (after a few, ya know, years experiance )

Blasphemous.

Well, I don't know. Maybe you were feeling extra lazy?

One more ability done. (2 others done, but i ended up hating the ideas by the time i saw 'em working)

I still need ideas =)

Here are some ideas for buildings...

Dimensional Static Generator: A very weak construct that makes the demons unable to switch dimensions while around it. Although it might need a construction limit to avoid massing it, it'd be a nifty defense tool for the runners.

Randomization: A forerunner to the chaser's ultimate. It makes the target runner's dimensional switch spell unpredictable -- for the duration of the spell, dimensional switches will take him to a random place in the other dimension. This'll difficult planning and will make adaptation necessary.

WTFish
All names are really just to explain concept, they would need to be changed:

Dimensional Replication: Creates a mirror image of you, and switches you to the other dimension (mirror image is created in exactly same place as you were, so it is seamless transition so they still think it is you). Your mirror image could also mirror all your movements as well I suppose (like the complete opposite direction that you choose, to lead them away), so it doesn't just sit there (if possible to do this).

Dimensional Virus: The next person who changes dimensions after this will cast will contract a virus, pinging their location and slowing them for a certain amount of time.

Warp Ball: Creates a ball of energy in the other dimension that will move towards the target. If it reaches the target, it will teleport the target to your location (no matter what dimension they are in, even if they can't see it, if it reaches their location it will teleport them). The ball can be killed by attacks, but they would need to switch dimensions to know it was there.

Mental Block: Places a device onto the target, when the target
tries to change dimensions, it fails, and the target is slowed for x seconds.

Dimensional Rope: Creates a magical rope between target and caster, if the target changes dimension, you change also (and vise versa).. lasts XX seconds. I suppose if target gets out of range the rope will disappear.

You could have a whole lot of spells that when you cast them, they cannot be seen because they appear in the other dimension, but will deal damage to people in either if it hits (eg a shockwave invisible in one dimension, visible in the other).

Not just a tag, this would be a cool idea for an arena as well (I think this was my first ever idea for a map lools).

I like that idea ;) And considering i alredy have unit-based disabling of abilitys working (as in im able to disable an ability for a single unit ^^) it wouldn't take too much effort.

That would involve complicating a nice and simple spell But it is a good idea.

A verry complicated spell. But i love the idea! ;) Only problem would be balancing it, but that would just be as simple as making it need a research.

Hmmm... Im not sure how pinging will work with the way i have the dimensional switching set up, but if i can get it to ping a location so people in both dimensions see it, possibly as diffrent colours, then that would be sweeet.

I'm not that big a fan of this idea. Its quite a bit too powerfull for this kind of map. And it would be a bitch to code.

For a possible future chasers non-ultimate, that would be a great addition

i like the idea, but making it work... that would be allot of work.

Would work for a diffrent genre of map, but with a map like this its a little diffrent. Don't want runners to just suddenly die without cause. And with the way i set up dimensions, it would take a bit of coding to get functions to do such things.

Altho, abilitys that have active effects in both dimensions would be nice. (maybe a building for runners that whimpers when a chaser comes near it in the other dimension? or walls that exist in both dimensions at the same time)

Thank you both for your ideas! lets see if i can get a playable alpha done!

I'm not sure how the teleportation spell is triggered, but couldn't you just insert an If / Then / Else condition within that trigger that checks if the unit has the Randomization debuff on it and, if it does, moves it instantly into some "Random Point Within Region" in the other dimension?

Except you have to enter a pathable area on the other side, which makes things a bit more difficult. Even there i could do it, but i alredy have a working ability of that type for a current hero, so i'll wait till i need another such idea before fully considering it ;)

Also, i use JASS. I couldn't do half of what i've done in this short time if i wasn't using JASS.
