External Checking With Triggers

I remembered a thread was made once on this topic, but after searching for a bit, it seems that it has been lost in the sands of time... Or I suck and I don't know how to search.

Anyways. Question:
Is it possible to check things external of WarCraft 3? Such as, can I use triggers or whatever to check how many threads are in the WC3C forums then apply it to WarCraft 3, and use that number to deal damage?
I'm just curious, though still hoping for an answer.
I don't really care how I would DO it, I just want to know if you CAN.
Examples would be appreciated.

Hello,

Well, I'm quiet new around here so my thought probably doesn't count.. anyway I doubt that you'll be able to reach any external files/pages/data from within WE.

I don't know if someone around here could fix some workaround, but I doubt it (no offense intended).

No. You can't access any external thing through wc3 without perhaps custom natives or something. (ignoring gamecache here, because it's technically external, but useless for your purposes)

Idea: you could write a program which retrieves the desired data and writes it in the gamecache file... this would make it possible to get the data ingame by loading the data out of the gamecache

This would be a way ...but you must have the program running in the background ...and ...
