Hello everybody, I'm making a RPG and I would like to know what is easy to start with? I've been wanting to know this, should I start with Triggers, Terrain, or Units? Tell me what you think! |

I find that terraining is one of the most intuitive aspects of mapping. However, you may wish to simply lay out a basic foundation to your map if you're keen to start working with the editor, and then go to the drawing board and plan out what you're trying to accomplish. Knowing your goal will make it clear to you what you need to work on to reach it. |

You need a concept of what your map will play like before you need anything else. Then, with that, you can decide what the best plan of attack is. I find it helpfull to get the terrain layed out first, or even almost done. Then adding features one at a time. Like a hero. Then creeps. Then whatever else. Adjust your plan as you go to suit how development is actually going along. You don't wanna try to develop a map by doing one whole window in the WE at a time... you want to develop it by logical features. |

In the map I'm currently working on, I haven't touched the terrain. right now its a smallest size map completely dirt. I prefer to finish the heros and items, and give them a terrain to play in later. |

Plan, plan, plan, prototype, prototype, test version, develop. That seems to work for me. |

Past planning, I start with terrain. I've noticed in my travels that maps tend to have a higher likelyhood of getting finished if the terrain is 100% finished. |

Plan, plan, plan, plan other projects to get some critical distance from this one, plan, plan, plan, make an early terrain for motivation, plan, make the systems to get a working map, then spend an equal amount of time adding heroes and spells and testing them. I end up with a nearly final version, it mostly just needs balance afterwards. (well, idealy. I've had my share of bugs after release.) |

I guess it could depend slightly on the type of map, but imo terrain should come first. Spells and Pathing almost always have to take terrain into consideration. Doesn't have to be the final finished terrain, but at least a basic layout. |
