The Sound editor is an underestimated part of the World Editor, but it is still a very useful part.
The Sound editor Is located between the trigger editor and the object editor, here:

You can play sounds with the trigger editor. All actions in the “sounds” category are for playing sounds and music. You can also add sounds in the cinematic – send transmission from unit –action.
Warcraft’s own sounds
When you open the Sound Editor you will notice a lot of sounds already in the editor, those are all the Warcraft standard sounds you can use. They are splitted up in two parts: music and sounds. Sounds are in .wav format, and music in .mp3, but you can still chose to play music like sounds.
In the editor select a sound, and try to play it, if you like it, you can select to use it by clicking use as sound or, if it is music you can chose between use as sound and use as music. The only difference is the actions you play them with, and music volume is normally lower than sounds.
Importing sounds
You can also import your own sounds/music, there’s two places in the editor to do this; you can import it like you do with any other file, in the import manager. Or you can do it in the sound editor, by clicking import sound, both ways should work.
When you have imported a sound, go press the “use as sound” -button or “use as music” –button.
For cinematic maps, I suggest you to use voices you record on your computer. Of course you can only do that if you got a microphone, but it really adds a lot to an average cinematic.
You need a program for recording, I suggest Audacity because its free, easy to use, and easy to edit the sounds, I wound explain you how to do this in this tutorial, because this one is just about the sound editor.
Editing Sounds
Yes, it is true; you can even edit sounds in the sound editor too.
You can not edit music though. But music can, like I have said before, be used as sounds, so it doesn’t really matter. There is also a max amount of music (mp3 files) you can use in your map.
In the sound editor you can change:
- Variable name - obvious i guess
- Make the sound looping - makes the sound repeat itself until manually stopped (by trigger)
- Make the sound a 3d sound - makes it only played in a certain area, 3d sounds must be played with "sound - play unit at point" or "sound - play sound on unit"
- Set volume - the volume it will be played at. 127 is max and standard...
- Set fade in and fade out rate - the rate it fades in / out
- Change Pitch - the speed of it. Really makes some funny sounds!
- Change channel - you can't play two sounds at once in the same channel, i dont know if there is more about this one.
Ambient sound in Region
That is another cool thing you can do; Add a looping sound sound to a specific region. When a player is in it, he'll hear it.
To do so take the sound in the sound editor, and change effect to Looping Ambient then select your region and add the sound to it.
