The Project: Emblem of War seeks to translate the turn-based "tactical" combat style gameplay of the Fire Emblem series into Warcraft III. Fire Emblem is a long running series of console RPGs that, up until only the previous three outings, has only been released in Japan; western gamers will probably be more familiar with other games of the genre such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Shining Force and Dofus.
In the Fire Emblem games, players take turns to command their units, with the aim of destroying the enemy units. Every turn, a unit can take a move and/or an action. The vast majority of actions are attacks; these can be used to damage and kill enemies.
Some specific gameplay elements unique to Fire Emblem are:
Hidden information:
- Players move all their units at once, then end their turn, rather than each unit having its own turn.
- If it can, an attacked unit will counter attack automatically.
- If a unit has enough speed compared with an enemy, whether it is the attacker or the counterer, it can double attack.
- A feature called the "Weapons Triangle" operates. Certain weapons have advantages over others, like rock, paper, scissors. Sword beats axe, axe beats spear, spear beats sword.
- In some of the later games, there is also a "Magic Triangle" for the three types of mage. Anima (Elemental magic) beats light, light beats dark and dark beats anima.
The Map: This map is a "proof of concept" demo. At the moment, two players can fight off, multiplayer, against each other using a set of predefined weapons. The vast majority of elements from the combat system have been translated, including the weapons triangle. There is presently no AI; the creation of a basic AI is the next step However, before I do this, I would like to try and iron out all the bugs from the basic combat system. To do this, I'm posting here for help.
The map is two player, and the controls are fairly simple: When it is your turn, click on a unit with an exclamation mark. To move, simply click on one of the selection circles that will appear in valid locations. To use an ability, simply click on one of the ones that appear in the command menu. When you have finished your turn, press escape and a dialogue will appear, asking you if you wish to finish or not.
The map has NOT been tested with two players simultaneously. I would be particularly grateful if people could do this, as I suspect there will be a few bugs introduced by this.
Known Issues:
Hidden information:
- At the moment, either player can end the turn at any time (Therefore player 1 could cancel player 2's turn). This is intentional, for testing purposes, so that a single player can test the system out. This will, obliviously, not be in the final version.
- Weapon durability isn't fully implemented.
- Sometimes, you can "Jump" over obstacles. I have a good idea how to fix this, though its going to be a slightly time consuming fix. This shouldn't be so much of an issue on the test map, as its more or less a wide open space.
