SPELL MAKING SESSION #8

The point of this, and all other spell making sessions, is to give all spell makers a challenge along with a specific theme.
You will as a participant submit a single spell based around the given theme.
Winner will be decided by public vote.

Prize:
The winner of each session gets 20 reputation points and an award icon (Appears under your name and in your profile).
Additional second and third place prizes may be awarded if there is enough participation.

Rules:
  • You can use JASS / GUI / WEU / vJass / Anything else that you want for your spell. (Specify in the testmap)
  • The spell you enter must be new and made specially for this contest.
  • Everybody is allowed and encouraged to enter, as long as they follow the rules.
  • Please post info and WIP screenshots of your spell while you are making it to get more activity in this thread.
  • Imported models are only allowed if they are used for very minor things. (A particle emitter or ribbon emitter could be acceptable.)
  • One entry per person.

When your spell is finished, just attach the map to this thread.
When the session is finished, I recommend submitting your spell to the resource section assuming it follows the rules!

Theme:

Mana Burn ~
The theme is to find a unique and clever application to the simple concept of burning mana from a unit.
I don't want to see Demon Hunter Mana Burn ripoffs, there are hundreds of other applications. :P

Deadline:

The session ends ten days from now. (18:00 GMT+2: May 25, 2007 this is without daylight savings so 17:00 GMT, 12 hours later than original deadline)
Potential extensions are possible if lots of people need them.

Future Themes:

If you have ideas for future themes for spell sessions, please PM them to myself or Blu.
Blu and I will be the ones dealing with these from here on in.

It's been a long time since the last spell session, but I think they are as integral to the site as the skinning contests.
Let's keep them going!

Good luck everybody!

Nice. I want to join :D

Does that include systems made by others?

EDIT:

Btw, are custom textures allowed? And what's the GMT for the deadline?

No, custom textures are not allowed.
The session is not about wowing people with how cool of a skin you give the caster, but about the spell itself.

The deadline will be GMT-5, I'll edit the first post accordingly.

And yes, you can use any system.
Just be sure to credit the appropriate people.

Also do remember that after the session is over you might have issues with system redistribution if you try to submit the spell to the resource section.
Otherwise, any system is fair game.

Yeh I can still make it in time, I should be home from Germany in 2 days xD

EDIT:

Aside from the Mana Burn theme, can we spice it up and mix it with other elements such as time? Because what if I want to pause units and stop them in time then after than burn the mana, would that be allowed?

As long as it burns mana in some way, the rest is entirely up to you.
Clever applications are probably going to do better.

Oh ok.

Best of luck to everyone and anyone who enters! May fortune favor us all :p

Yeah! Props to you, Dusk, for getting another of these started!

I'm most definitely, without a doubt, most certainly going to enter.

Hahaa!!! at last a serious and enjoyable spell session/contest :)

You can count with me.

@Rising Dusk:
just some offtopic questions.... Why blu didn't host the contest?? Are you going to participate??

I came up with the theme 10 minutes before posting.
So if the public thinks that's an "unfair advantage" I will not participate.
Although I will if noone minds. xD

And Blu didn't post because he's going to Croatia for some international programming contest.
So I'm just doing this stuff until he has the opportunity to be on more. :P

Even though I can only do GUI, I'm probably gonna enter.
Some questions, though:
1) Will MUI/Not MUI affect your score? (even though its a public poll)
2) If you make a spell for this contest, are you allowed to use it for other things later?
3) Will the efficiency of the spell matter? For example, does it matter if you use a formula for level damage (50+(level of spell * 50)) or use something like: if level is 1 do 100, if level is 2 do 150?
05-14-2007, 07:42 PM#12
Fulla
Its generally a public poll/vote, so MUI, efficiency etc. are simply a part of the spell and give you a higher chance of winning.

Why wouldnt you be aloud or how would they stop you using a spell you made?

====

Mana Burn, hmm a slightly narrow theme?
But ill see wat ideas I can come up with.

Someone might look at your spell and vote/not vote for you if it is/isn't MUI.
In my humble opinion, MUI is always worth it, but it isn't necessary.

2) If you make a spell for this contest, are you allowed to use it for other things later?
Of course, the only restriction is that spells for this session must be made SPECIFICALLY for this session.
You can then use it however you want afterwards.

3) Will the efficiency of the spell matter?
Same thing as the MUI, basically. Keeping things efficient might secure you a few votes.

MUI and efficiency are required if you plan to submit your spell afterwards.
They are however not *required* for the session.

Mana Burn, hmm a slightly narrow theme?
There's no restrictions as to how or what causes it.
As long as something loses mana and takes damage as a result, it fits the theme.

Is it also allowed to create a complete hero, meaning 1 passive, 2 active + 1 ultimate?
Because my idea is already a finished hero and not just 1 spell.

Maybe we can have a hero contest after this..
