Split Upon Death

Is there a way (without triggers) to give a unit the "Hydra," ability? When it dies, it splits into two smaller units.

Yeah it's uh... An Object Editor ability.
Called "Spawn Hydra"

Ye.... Standard Abilities > Neutral Hostile > Units > Spawn Hydra

Data - Unit Type

Can't believe I didn't see that ability. I was looking at a Hydra Unit, and it said unknown ability (asp)...
