Taur's Football
(btw you can skip my little rant here but I suggest that if you're going to play the game you read that little bit on how to play... okay not so little but still read it)
So a few months ago I was browing through the US East games and I saw... a football map (WALK football)! Being an avid college football fan, (Go cornhuskers :P) I decided to try it out...
Long story short I'll be seeing a psychiatrist about my experience for a long time...
Then I had to make a map for my clan CBS shaman challenge. So after overcoming my trauma I decided to go ahead and make a real football (an american football map, not soccer) map that was actually fun to play and did not consist of watching the QB and one other player run the same play over and over again while you contributed vitally by running useless routes.
The result was
Taur's Football, the first wc3 football map to actually remotely resemble a real football map.
How to Play
If you need help look in game at the quests or at your help unit. I have yet to make a quick tutorial cine or anything like that, sorry. It might be a little bit confusing, but bear with it.
Basic Gameplay
I really dont recommend that people who dont know how to play football play this map, it's quite heavily targetted towards people who know how to play. Basically you are either the offense or the defense at any one time, the Offense's job is to take the ball past the blue line (they have 4 tries to do it) and then they reset. They keep doing this until they reach the endzone and if they do they get 7 points. The defense has to stop the offense from getting there by tackling the person who has the ball. A play ends once the person who has the ball is tackled and a new play begins. I dont want to explain everything here, just hope you watch the super bowl from time to time :P
More Advanced Gameplay
You can have 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 or 1 on 2. If you are the only person on the team then you control the entire thing, pretty basic and similar to other games. If there are two players, it is advised that you talk to your team mate (if it's 2 on 2 you should set your play clock to a high amount) and decide who will play the Quarterback and who will play the other units. This can be important because several players require some micro and it is important to manage your QB so that you dont get sacked and can get yourself in a good position to throw. You should either take turns making plays or (better yet) co-operate to make them. It can be a pain sometimes if you have a bad partner but having a partner makes a huge difference.
Offense - Routes
I wanted to make it a little bit different from other games such as Madden. The major difference is the play control. In madden most users just choose a play and press the button for the appropriate reciever. Here I wanted to encourage more creavtive play-calling so you have to set all the routes yourself. Click on a wide reciever, tide end or running back and click on the flag icon, then set the 1st route point, 2nd route point, etc. You can have up to 4 points on your route. The drawback is of course that it takes much longer to make a play, so I intend to add a basic playbook later on and make it so that you can make your own plays during the game and save them to the playbook (just for that game) so you can use them repeatedly.
Defense
In defense the positioning of your units matters a lot. If a unit has an assigned target (e.g. each corner is assigned to a reciever by default), it has a blue arrow going from him to the target. Use Set Target to give your unit a target (e.g a running back that isnt being covered) or to change his target. Toggle Guard On to make your unit stay back (not blitz) and pick up any free units, and toggle it Off to make them blitz.
Features include:
- A somewhat realistic looking pitch with yardage signs and goal posts (thanks Chriz :P)
- 5 different arenas to choose from
- 4 different races with 9 different types of players each
- Many special abilities for each type of player
- A customizeable route system which allows you to make your own plays as opposed to picking the same one over and over again.
- Gameplay similiar to actual football
- A reasonably good AI that will manage the units you're not controlling.
- Realistic football features, e.g. Interceptions, yardage, Kickoffs, Incomplete Passes based on distance and the number of enemies around, Hand-off's,Substitutions, players tiring, etc.
- A unique multiboard where you can view either the Scoreboard (basic info about the game) or by pressing the arrow (a.k.a. minimize button) you can view the full game statistics.
- Various other featurs I probably missed here
Coming Soon
- A playbook that lets you choose plays and save your own to use later
- A tutorial cine to show you how to play
- Field Goals. I dont want to make a classic field goal I find thier dumb for a game. I think instead thier'll be a short minigame to see if you get the 3 points.
- More races & arenas
Well that it's please try it out and tell me what you think of it.
YOU CAN PLAY SINGLE PLAYER to test out the map, you'll just have to control both sides. Oh and since the other team will get the ball first you will not see any offensive lightnings. Just wait 25 seconds, start the play and throw the ball to the safety (the farthest defense player) to get an interception and then you can be on offense.
Screenshots below.
The nightelves decide to be smart and attack the bottom with recievers against a blitzing Undead team. The undead are smarter though and use land-locked to stop the pass. The offense is basically screwed, and:
They get sacked.
Next play they go for a deep pass and put on all the passing buffs. The undead dont have a dispel and...
get raped rather badly
After that it's just a mop up play, so the NE go for the quick option play. The undead try a last ditch attempt and use darkness to make thier units invisible until the play starts.
The play starts and despite the undead hidden blitz, the RB walks into the endzone.
A few minutes in, and the statistics do not paint a pretty picture for Blue (the undead).
