Boats!

Ok i'm not sure if this is possible or how hard it would be but can someone help me out? I had the idea of making boats that could work kinda like the zeppelin only on water. Since there is already a boat model made, in 'Doodads->Water', is there any way to somehow use that model as the model used when creating a new unit? If someone could please figure out how to do this then the settings from the zeppelin could just be used so it could hold units.

Nobody seems to know how to get boats working without very specific triggers, like making regions by all shorelines, The only way to have a makeshift 'ship' is to make it a air unit, hope this helps.

I might be totally wrong, but try and use the zeppelin unit and change the model name to the boat's. From there, you only have to change the movement type... right?

Yeah thats what i was asking how to do. Because you cant change it to the boat's model because the boat isnt a unit, its a doodad. How do I change the zeppelin's model to the boats model and just have it be air then?

I thought in the UMSWE editor it was also a unit...

The easiest way to make boats is to make them flying units and then edit the pathing maps so all land is marked as non-flyable. That way boats can only go on water.

In order to get boats AND flying units, the movement type of all flying units needs to be changed to "NONE", which will allow them to move over everything.

The only real problem after that is how to build boat units, and how to get them to drop off units. To let them drop off units (which seems to have 0 range), make some shallow areas and mark them as flyable and walkable so both ships and walking units can move on that area. To make a dock-type building, maybe make a flying building with movement height 0 and make a shallow water area marked as buildable?

Theres a map that uses boats its called "you sunk my battleship" and its supposed to be pretty good from what i hear.

He also has a Naval Arena up it seems by this thread, anyway this should provide you with some inspiration should you reach a dead end.

ya i was wondering about that. that is one theing they left out from the last war craft but cant you still get oil?

Oil eh? I suppose you could make a trigger... Whenever a selected oil tanker is sent to a target oil spot, when he arrives it will replace it with an full oil tanker and automatically order it back to the nearest refinary. Once it gets there it can add a custom variable for oil and then replace the full tanker with an empty one, and order it to go back to the oil spot again. It's important to have the triggers give orders so that they will keep on harvesting oil automatically once you order them to do it.

creating a boat map is rather simple...
edit the terrain.slk to make every thing unflyable except dirt.
and thus you have a boat map...

That map is not a good boat demonstration. The boats in that are just flying units and they can go over land as well... Well the boat you start with is that way anyway. Other boats might be ground units, but all the water on the map is shallow water and there are no ramps, so its really nothing special.
