This is not Warcraft in space...

...it's StarCraft in Azeroth!

My altered melee experiments continue. The last map I designed, Minimal Melee, which is already in open beta, wasn't entirely to my satisfaction, so I decided to do a reboot and try again, which brings us to this topic and it's title.

I am rather excited about the announcement of StarCraft 2 and have been playing some original StarCraft again in recent months. I really like SC's gameplay so I thought of attempting to make something similar in WC3; this brings us to my second attempt at an altered melee.

I took the designs I have made for Minimal Melee and repackaged them in a more SC-like format. Races now have a proper techtree, more even expansion capabilities, I have introduced air units, triggered a SC-like armour system with absolute damage reductions, gave units lower hp to make battles faster, remade the terrain... It's a new map gameplay-wise, while remaining similar to Minimal Melee in racial designs. Each race has few trainable units (8) which are visualy more coherent (for example, no trolls and tauren for the horde, only orcs).

Making an altered melee is a lot of work, but I have finished most of it by now. I will probably have an open beta ready in a few weeks, stay tuned. I hope I can get as many testers as last time.

ANITARF! You know this damned well isn't enough for a map project thread.

You know the usual too...

Does this mean you'll be using all the usual poorly-made Starcraft models that are floating around?

It's WC3 units with SC-style gameplay, I think.

Yeah, that's what it sounded like.

Well, the map is now in alpha testing, Griffen and I have already played a couple of 1v1 games. Humans, Undead and Night Elves are already playable, while Orcs are still a work in progress. I'm wondering if I could get a couple more alpha testers for 2v2 tests; candidates should be able to play on Northrend bnet server in late evening (11PM or so) CET (this would be sometime in the afternoon in the US).

By demanding it be on Northrend you exclude me, but you could always send it to me and I could play it with my super full clan.

Well, the point was that I want to participate in the tests. Sure, players telling me what they feel is over- and what underpowered is useful, but in the end I need to see some games to be able to comfortably decide what really needs to be changed. The last time I released an open beta, I got a lot of responses and that was great, but despite that I didn't have a single replay to watch in the end.

You can watch replays, right? If you want them, they're not hard to save. And wouldn't it be good to see how an entire group of new players learned and progressed through the initial stages of the map? Just to get an unbiased reading of the learning curve and such.

Whatever though, your call. Not that it matters a lot to anyone, but I'm not going onto Northrend just to test a map. :p
