Unit spells now have levels, but how do they work?

It would be very nice if I no more had to make 5 different versions for each unit spell anymore, but is it possible now and if so how?

What can the new feature that unit spells also can have mulitple levels (like hero spells) be used for?

Normally I'd make 5 versions of each unit ability like this:
Bloodhand (Level 1)
Bloodhand (Level 2)
Bloodhand (Level 3)
Bloodhand (Level 4)
Bloodhand (Level 5)

Can it somehow be avoided now? If so how? If not what then can the new feature (as of patch 1.13) be used for?

Look at the necromancer raise dead to see how to use multiple level unit spells, thats how the skeltal mage thing is done.

How is the ability advanced to level 2?
