Here are a few screenshots from my map Broken Kingdom. It is a 256x256 Diplomacy/Europa RTS style map. I will post more later. The terrain is about 90% complete. So any critique will help me in polishing it up. The map is about 50% complete.

I love it. I think your map could use a little work. Try adding a small black border around your dext and maybe some style to it like embossing or something. Also, the shadow around the map to the paper isn't even, get rid of it and use the layer properties for a nice shadow. I also think the map underneath should be sharper.

HEy Zurg, looks great, but there are some things u could edit:

1.) try not to use original trees, if u decide to use custom ones try to use only these, maybe u want to download some other trees somewhere, because only one custom tree is a bit boring

2.) i think the village is called whitechruch with an "e"

3.) its Europe not Europa, u are german, right?

4.) using the farm and the tavern as the only buildings doesnt look good, especially when they are in one line like in the screenshot

Looks great Zurg. Can we have some more informative details about your map that you are creating? Not all of us (including me) know what Diplomacy/Europa RTS styled map is like exactly. Is it a melee map? An RPG? Or... what?

Neato burrito!

gahhaha!

anyway, looks pretty fly, I like the long range shots, gives a nice feel. What kind of gameplay are we looking at?

P.S. where are the animated custom trees at? (download wise)

Playing the Europa, Diplomacy, and Rise of China maps have been some of my most exciting experiences on battlenet. Here is a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europa_%28warcraft%29 to a wikipedia entry about the map Europa.

These maps are almost a hybrid of turn based and real time strategy gameplay. Economy is turn based, allowing players to focus primarily on military and diplomatic aspects. Every turn a player receives resources based on the number of territories they control, usually designated by a unit or circle of power. The players then use these resources to build military units, upgrades and research to capture more territories and eventually capture the entire map. It is alot like the board game Risk.

The main draw of this type of map for me was the diplomatic side. Because the games are not as fast paced as normal melee games, and because of the focus on territory control, who you befriend or antagonize is key.

My main peeve with this type of map was the scale and lack of polish. With Broken Kingdom, I wanted a more regional and realistic scale to the conflict. Of course I enjoyed world changing battles, but I think smaller region with more detail provides more player immersion and caters better to Warcraft III's RPG feel. I hope a more realism of Broken Kingdom will only increase the diplomatic and strategic stakes.

This terrain is the backdrop for a RTS style game. I have attemted to make it as realistic as possible, while accounting for gameplay constraints.

Looks great. Some of nasrudin's village doodads would look nice in the villages though.

No need for more custom stuff. I think it looks fine like that, the blend of custom and standard trees looks good too.

What tree model is that? I saw it again in your revenge cinematic (which was very nicely choreographed, btw). How many polies does this model have? I'd like to use it perhaps in some of my maps, but is it much more expensive than the alternative Blizzard models?

Well Zurg, this sounds like a great map and looks terrific too! So with this diplomatic thing, will it be like Medieval Total War? This map sounds a bit like the campaign mode of Medieval Total War to me. Which is a good thing!

[edit]
By the way, how many players will there be to play this map?
